Your sleeping position may require that you need a different pillow with a different level of firmness, when sleeping on a mattress your body, neck, and shoulders require a different amount of support depending on your sleeping positions and the same rules apply when you are looking for a pillow, ideally to get the best most supportive pillow ideally you should take into consideration your preference of pillow types, the support that the pillow offers and your sleeping positions.

If you are a side sleeper, then you should sleep with a pillow that supports your head, shoulders, and neck thus allowing for your spine to be supported. When sleeping on your side a thicker pillow is needed so that your shoulder doesn’t sink into your mattress thus causing your neck to bend unnaturally causing you to have neck pains. When you are sleeping on your side ideal you want to sleep with a pillow between your knees to keep your spine in its natural alignment. A pillow that is recommended if you are a side sleeper is a latex pillow or a memory foam pillow.
If you are a back sleeper, it is important to consider the natural curvature of your spine, when sleeping on your back you need support not only for your neck, head but also your shoulders too. The pillow that you use should be lower than what a side sleeper would use, a supportive pillow that will hold your head and neck in place without allowing it to sink into the pillow is a pillow that you should be looking for, a medium loft pillow is ideal in this case if you are a back sleeper a memory foam pillow may be good for you.
