Can A Mattress Cause You Back Pain?

Can A Mattress Cause You Back Pain?

Is it possible for a mattress to cause you back?

Yes, if your mattress is old or if it isn’t a good fit for you hen you may find yourself waking up stiff the next morning finding it hard to move, because you have a sore back, if that is the case then it is normal to think that your mattress may be at fault. Your mattress can cause you to have back pains, or it can worsen your already existing back pain, one of the prime reasons for this is the lack of support that a mattress offers. The lack of support that a mattress has to offer reinforces you to have poor sleeping posture, it can strain your muscles and it will not keep your spine in alignment, these things promote back pains.

A mattress that provides comfort and back support helps reduce low back pain, this allows the natural structure of your spine to be in alignment and it allows your spine to properly rest and rejuvenate itself while you sleep.

Here are some things that may tell you whether it is your mattress causing you to have back pain.

Back pain is, unfortunately, one of those things that up to 80% of the population experience at least once in their lifetime, it is something that is very common.

  • Saggy mattress

Your mattress usually gets saggy as a result of wear and tear, the foam in your mattress or the materials in your mattress often get soft over time, as they are being used a lot of pressure is put on them every single night so after a few years they start to give out. After a few years when your mattress starts to saggy, it no longer is as supportive as it once was, when a mattress that you are using isn’t giving you the support that you and your back need it then causes you to have back pain due to the lack of support that it offers.

  • Struggling to get comfortable

Tossing and turning all night trying to find a comfortable position to fall asleep in will not only keep you up but it may cause you to have back pains as well. If you are unable to find a comfortable position in bed then it may be because, your mattress no longer is comfortable, if you have a mattress that is uncomfortable and unsupportive then it is likely that the mattress is no longer offering you spine support that you need thus leading to back pain.

  • Waking up during the night

If you are waking up during the night often then it may be time for you to trade out your mattress and get a new one that offers you and your back the right support and comfortability, this will lessen your back pain and will allow you to get a good nights sleep.

  • Waking up with back pain

This is the main way that you would know if your mattress is causing you to have back pain or if it is worsening your already existing back pain. If you go to bed fine but wake up with your lower back muscles or spine feeling really weak and sore and this keeps repetitively happening, then your mattress will most likely be a contributing factor to your back pain. If you sleep on a mattress that is either saggy, lost its comfortability, or that no longer offers you support then when you go to sleep the natural curvature of your spine wouldn’t have the support that it needs, if it doesn’t have the support that it needs this will lead to you having back pains.

If you are suffering from back pains due to your mattress then this problem is fairly easy to fix, you just need to invest in a new mattress that offers all of the qualities that you need to have a well rest night without the back pain, most often when people are looking, they opt for a memory foam mattress because, of the amazing qualities that it has to offer. A memory foam mattress is both firm and supportive, it conforms to your body thus providing you with pressure point relief and reducing aches. The viscoelastic foam forms to the natural curvature of your spine, therefore, promoting great lumbar support which reduces back pains from happening in the first place. In addition to that if you already have existing back pain then a memory foam mattress is a great mattress to get to reduce back pains as it promotes back support which reduces back pain.
