How Long Can a Mattress Last?

How long can a mattress last?

Majority of mattresses generally last between 7 and 10 years. But there are many factors that can influence this. The quality of the mattress, the materials used and even things such as the weight and sleeping style of a person can affect the lifespan of the mattress. Evidently a mattress doesn’t have a definite sell by date and ultimately, it’s the decision of the individual to decide when its time for them to swap out their mattress.

There are many factors that affect a mattresses longevity, and include:

1. Materials: The materials that are used have a large influence on the lifespan of the mattress. Materials such as latex and high-density polyfoam can last an exceptionally long time, whilst low-density polyfoam can become worn out much faster.

2. Original quality: The quality of the mattress when it was originally bought will have an affect on how long it lasts. A cheap, basic mattress will obviously wear out faster than a higher end mattress. Though some of the time the price of a mattress doesn’t always determine the quality, generally the more expensive a mattress the better quality it will be and consequently the longer it will last.

3. Mattress type: The type of mattress you have can also affect its lifespan, whether that’s an all-foam, hybrid, latex, or innerspring. The type of mattress can ultimately affect how long it lasts. Latex mattresses usually last the longest, then its meds that are made using higher density memory foam or polyfoams. The lower-density foam mattresses wear out quicker, this is the same with hybrid mattresses too. Traditionally innerspring mattresses have the shortest lifespan, at around about 5 to 6 years.

4. Sleep positions & body weight: The position you sleep in and you body weight, will impact how quick your mattress will wear down. The heavier sleepers might find that their mattresses begin to sag earlier, whilst side sleepers may find a lot of sagging around the hips and shoulders.

5. Care routine: Generally the better you take care of something the longer it will last. Correct mattress care consists of routine cleaning, using protective covers, and following the manufacturer care guidelines. Many mattresses can be flipped or rotated on a regular basis, but you should always check the manufacturers advice.

When should you replace a mattress?

These are some questions you should ask yourself when thinking about replacing your mattress:

  • Are you sleeping well?
  • Do you find that you sleep better at hotels or when visiting family?
  • Does your mattress feel saggy or unsupportive?
  • Do you wake up with aches and pains?
  • Do you or your partner toss and turn through the night trying to get comfortable?
  • Do you feel your partner’s movements at night more than you used to?
  • Have you noticed an increase in allergies or asthma symptoms?
  • Has it been 7+ years since you purchased your bed?

If you can answer yes to more than one of these questions, then it’s time to get a new mattress. A good quality mattress is extremely important for a good night’s sleep, as it will provide the best support and comfort.
