Mattress vs Back Pain – Why Mattresses Cause Back Pain

Why Does My Mattress Cause Back Pain?

Struggling with back pain due to your mattress? Well, you are not alone, there are many who suffer from this very same problem too. Mattresses come in many unique styles, thicknesses, and textures; some thick, some thin, some springy, some foamy. Whatever sleeping arrangements you have, it is vital to be comfortable and supportive. No one wants to have a night of bad sleep at night and a sore back all day, so why does this happen to so many of us?

The best and most straightforward way to put it is... you need a new mattress. Yours may be too soft, too firm, or too old, which is why buying a new one to replace the old one and fill in the blanks missing from the old one will be your best solution. But do not just take my word for it, let us investigate it.

 Here is an example:

“Meet Anna. Anna has been sleeping on a mattress far too soft for her back. Hers is 10 years old and has sunk in the middle with a bumpy consistency, however, Anna continues to use it to sleep and continues to suffer from a bad back.

One day, Anna decides she has had enough and wants a new one, so begins her search for one. Her search consists of firm beds, as she wants a complete change from what she is already using. However, whenever she tries to get comfortable with the firm options she has come across in stores, she cannot.

Anna realises she needs to find a balance of the two to best fit her needs and to feel comfortable and supported, so she ends up finding and purchasing a medium firmness mattress.”

What we can learn from Anna’s experience is finding the right bed for yourself is tricky work and requires you to go through a trial-and-error process until you find the right match. That brings us to our next point.

Which Mattress is Best for Back Pain?

Finding the right mattress, as I have said previously, is not easy work as there are so many to choose from and not one of the types are the same. Above you will notice an example of 4 types of mattresses side by side detailing their inner qualities. This is to show the difference between all of them and what you are potentially sleeping on.  sleeping on.

Next, we have the Hybrid mattress - As you can tell from the picture above, this is a mixture between the spring design and the memory foam design. Hybrids have a medium firmness and allow the sleeper to have the best of both worlds. Having a hybrid is good for your back pain as it will allow you to have access to the right level of softness and comfort and the right level of firmness, meaning your body is supported by the springs and the memory foam. Not everyone enjoys the firmness of the traditional spring or the sinking of the memory foam hence the reason a hybrid will fit those who need a balance. Try it, your body will thank you. you.

Lastly, the memory foam mattress – This is an increasingly popular choice for many as it is such a contrast to the traditional spring design and remembers how your body like to sleep. This is a soft snug option; it allows people to have an enjoyable sleep as they sink into their beds. But there are complications and limitations to this choice, especially if you have an injury like back pain. Unfortunately, due to the soft and cuddly nature of this design, it does not supply any of the needed support and therefore does not make a particularly good fit.

Can My Mattress Cause Me Pain Anywhere Else?

Yes, sadly, it’s not just your back that can suffer from the result of a bad, old mattress but also your hip, neck and some people even struggle with Sciatica. This is due to the problem being prolonged and left alone to develop into something more sinister.

If you have any of the problems listed above due to a bad sleeping environment, listed below are some suggestions on how to deal with them alongside changing your mattress:

Hip Pain:

If you are experiencing hip pain, this could be due to your mattress being of poor quality and you may need to see your doctor. You will also need to change this as soon as possible because your current one, much like with back pain, is either too soft, too firm or is too old. This doesn’t have to be an overly expensive reality as you can find reasonably priced high-quality products online. For example, here at FurnitureFul, we offer a wide range of hybrid mattresses for you to experience the best of both worlds and fix your pain for good.

Neck Pain:

With neck pain, changing both your mattress and pillow will really help you to fix the problem. This is due to the position in which you are sleeping. Much like with your back and your hip, you need to feel both comfort and support to avoid issues such as these, to do that you need a balance between a soft and hard bed – Hybrids. A hybrid bed will ensure that you have the setup that you need to have a great sleep. Pair this with a memory foam neck release pillow and your neck pain should dissipate.

Sciatica:

For those of you who don’t know what sciatica is,

“Sciatica is a term that describes symptoms of pain, numbness, and/or weakness that radiate along the sciatic nerve from the lower back to the buttocks and leg. The medical term for sciatica is lumbar radiculopathy.” Spine-Health

Though sciatica cannot be directly caused by an uncomfortable sleeping environment, it can be irritating and worsened by it. The best thing to do would be to speak to your doctor and replace your mattress with one that is better suited for your medical needs.
