The differences between a futon and a divan
No doubt, if you’re keeping up with the crowd, you may have come across these modern but unusual sounding bed types named the ‘futon’ bed and the 'divan’ bed. What exactly are they, you might be wondering? Are they something you should be interested in investing in? Or is something more sturdy and traditional like the Ottoman storage bed the way to go? Here at Furnitureful we’ve decided to give you a helping hand by exploring these two bed types and what fundamentally makes them different. So, without further ado, let’s get into it!
What is a futon bed?
A futon bed is a traditional Japanese style bed that is made up of a mattress and a duvet. The mattresses can come in a variety of thicknesses depending on your needs. A great advantage of futons is that the duvet and mattress of a futon bed can be rolled and stored away, leaving you with more space. On the other hand, many people do not find them especially comfortable even if they can be quite cheap. Futons require regular airing so that mold doesn’t develop and mites don’t infest them.
What is a divan bed?
A divan bed is made from a wooden structure that is upholstered in fabric. The bed is made to the same measurements as a mattress so that the mattress lies on top of each other in a compact manner. Although this can end up making your bed look rather boxy, this style of bed leaves you with a bed that is minimalistic and trendy in style. They can be great space savers and make your room appear wide and spacious.
Notable differences between a divan bed and a futon bed
- A futon bed does not consist of a bed itself but usually just a duvet and mattress. In contrast a divan bed still has a traditional bed frame along with the duvet and mattress.
- Futons can be rolled away and stored to keep them neatly out of the way. In contrast, although divan beds can be quite compact, they are still made up of a bed base that can be difficult to move and impossible to store away.
