You may have heard of this bed or you may not have. Either way, there’s no need to fear because today we’re going to dive into the history of the divan bed. We’ll cover what it is, what led to its origins, the modern divan as well its pros and cons. So, let’s get right into it!
What is a divan bed?
A divan bed’s focus is on creating a beautiful and minimalist aesthetic. A divan bed base is made from wood before being covered in soft wadding and then upholstered in fabric on top of that. The frame is the same size as the mattress which leads to a bed base design which is clean and compact looking.
Where did the divan bed originate from?
Since the mid 18th century the divan bed has become quite a common and well known bed base type. It is associated with periods such as the 1820s to the 1850s where the Romantic movement was at its height across the European continent.
Pros of divan beds
- They have fantastic proportions because the mattress sits right on top of the base with the base being not much bigger than the mattress, leaving you with plenty of room space.
- Divan beds can be a more economical choice over traditional beds which can be a tad more pricey.
Cons of divan beds
- In comparison, traditional larger beds like the Ottoman storage bed can feel a lot more sturdy and last longer based on quality.
- They can cause issues for some because they can be difficult to hoover beneath.
