The importance of sleep

Day in and day out we’re all warned about what’s going to happen if we don’t get enough sleep. You'll be tired. You’ll be groggy. Supposedly your brain won't be working at the best capacity. Yawn, yawn, yawn. But wait…what’s the real truth? How much sleep should we be getting? Is 8 and a half hours really the optimum? Well, here at Funrituregul we've decided to cover this deep topic of sleep so that you can learn all about what you truly should know. It’s easy to get lost in a sea of misinformation out there on the internet but we hope through this blog you’ll be able to achieve peace of mind (and a good night's sleep) knowing that you know all you need to know about good sleep practices. So, without further ado let’s get into it!

What are the stages of sleep?

There are 4 stages of sleep. Stages one to three consist of what is known as quiet sleep referred to as Non Rapid Eye Movement (NREM). Stage four, on the other hand, is referred to as active sleep and called Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep.

All these cycles are repeated continuously throughout the night and humans in particular need REM sleep so that they can form memories.

Did you know…

There actually used to be five stages of sleep but this categorisation was removed in 2007.

How much sleep do adults need?

Most adults require 6-8 hours to function although 8 is seen as the optimum.
