When should you replace a pillow?

It is known that getting a good night's sleep is extremely important for your physical and mental health. The best way to improve your night's sleep is by optimising your bed and bedding. This includes maintaining your pillow and replacing it when it’s necessary this is so you can have a pillow that provides you comfort as well as support.

It’s also important to be aware of the quality of the pillow as well as the cleanliness of the pillow. If you don’t switch out your pillow on a regular basis you can get allergic reactions, breakouts and even neck pains.

How often should you replace your pillow?

It is recommended to switch out your pillows every 1 or 2 years depending on the pillow and its state. By switching out your pillow, you are ensuring that the pillow is providing support, and is clean and allergen-free. Proper pillow care is also important to increase the lifespan and longevity of the pillow.

Generally, it will be quite obvious when you should switch out your pillow. If you are experiencing pain when you wake up in your neck and upper back or if it’s difficult to find a comfortable sleeping position. This all could indicate that it’s time to replace your pillow. Similarly to your mattress, you should also change your pillow when it starts to sag or becomes lumpy. It will also be time to get a new pillow if your pillow has become extremely discoloured or is causing you allergies.

Why is it important to replace your pillow?

It’s important to replace your pillow though it may feel like a chore because an old pillow can cause allergic reactions, skin breakouts and sore muscles. Old pillows can collect dust mites, fungus, mould and pet hair.

Face and hair oils can also seep into the pillow, causing it to stain a yellow colour. They may even clog your pores and cause acne or rashes for people who have sensitive skin.
