Which Mattress is the Firmest?

Which mattress is the firmest?

How to know if you need a firmer mattress?

If you feel as if the mattress you are currently sleeping on is too soft, then this is the sign you may need to upgrade to a firmer mattress. The obvious sign that the mattress is too soft if you feel as though you are sinking into the mattress which may result in you experiencing aches and pains.

If you are a larger individual, you may benefit from a firmer mattress as this will provide additional support for you. Your sleeping position may also determine whether you need a firmer or softer mattress. If you are a side sleeper, a firm mattress won’t be a good choice for you as it won’t be able to adjust to the curves of your body. You will generally want a mattress that is able to adjust to your body whilst giving you the appropriate support.

The different types of mattress are:

  • Innerspring
  • Memory Foam
  • Hybrid
  • Latex
  • Airbed

Innerspring Mattress

The innerspring mattress is the first and most used mattress out of all five types listed. This type of mattress uses a metal wire formation that is combined with springs to create a support frame that is then covered in fabric with shielding material that is utilized to the top of the mattress for further support. The innerspring mattress does not have as much material in its comfort layer which makes it a firmer mattress as it doesn’t have as much cushioning or padding which is generally added to make the mattress softer.

Memory Foam

A memory foam mattress joins a layer of memory foam with springs or support foam. Memory foam uses your body heat to soften and mould the mattress to your shape.  This then eventually provides significant support and comfort. The memory foam mattress is not a firm mattress as memory foam is known for its sinking quality. This can only happen if the mattress extremely soft.

Hybrid

A hybrid mattress is a multi-layer mattress that mixes memory foam, latex, or gel along with an innerspring system. Sleepers can feel both the pressure relief of the foam layers and the strong feel of a traditional spring mattress. The hybrid mattress isn’t the firmest type of mattress you can get but it isn’t the softest either. This is because it combines the firmness of an innerspring mattress with softness of memory foam or even latex.

Latex

A Latex mattress merges latex foam with either springs or reflex foam to make a supportive and secure sleep surface. The latex mattress is known to be a firm mattress as this is one of the most common complaints have about this type of mattress. However, on the other side this mattress does also form imprints of where the person generally sleeps so this shows that the latex mattress isn’t the firmest mattress you can get as firmer mattress generally keep their shape.

Airbed

An air bed is an inflatable mattress or sleeping pad. The airbed can be made to be firmer or softer as it is made with air and you have control of how much or how little you choose to use, the more air you use the firmer the bed will be and the less you use the softer it will be.

Which mattress is firmest overall?

The innerspring mattress is the firmest mattress overall because it uses spring as coils to make it structure and has the least amount of fabric and cushioning used. This makes the mattress feel firmer as there isn’t enough padding added which ultimately provides the soft cushiony feeling other mattress give off.
