Why Bed Rest For Ulcerative Colitis?
Bed rest, for any condition, is imperative for our health. Bed rest can get boring and long, taking away much of our time for the more important and joyous things in life. However, without sufficient bed rest we may find our health getting worse and the condition becoming more aggravating, which may mean we are increasing the time our body needs for bed rest, and possibly hospitalization even more.
What is Ulcerative Colitis?
Ulcerative colitis is a condition that causes inflammation of the colon, which is the large intestine, and rectum. This is a long-term condition, effecting the bowels (lower part of the digestive system) in which ulcers can form and bleed along the lining of the colon.
Ulcerative condition is generally believed that it is as an ‘auto immune’ condition, meaning a result of defects in the immune system causing it to attack its own tissues which results in a flare. In the UK, it is estimated that 1 in 420 people can get ulcerative colitis and that its likely develop between the ages of 15-25 years old.
Some Key Symptoms
- Abdominal or stomach pain

- More frequent need to empty bowels
- Weight loss
- Tiredness
Why Bed Rest is Important
Bed rest is important for ulcerative colitis because it decreases the likelihood of inflammation, abdominal pain and cramping as well as it being a fundamental part of recovery from treatment, such as surgery if you have had it done. Getting some good quality bed rest reduces many symptoms which can lead to better recovery so you can be more physically active and return to normal everyday life.
This is further supported by Neilanjan Nandi, a gastroenterologist at Penn Presbyterian Medical Centre shows how important bed rest is by stating that “Research shows that people with ulcerative colitis who get more sleep are less likely to have a flare.”
