Is the innerspring mattress the best mattress?

What is an innerspring mattress?

An innerspring mattress is a mattress that is made from a metal wire that also has wired coils which are then covered in a cushioning material which helps to provide additional support and comfort.

Are innerspring mattresses good for you?

The answer to this question depends on two main factors, the person using the mattress and you identify with good and bad. All mattresses can be bad if they are poorly made and are extremely thin and are unable to support you and your weight. Innerspring mattresses are mattresses that provide adequate support and are comfortable to sleep on, however, the comfortability and support also depend on the size of the individual who is using the mattress, the more weight the innerspring mattress has to take on the quicker the mattress will lose its support. The more coils an innerspring mattress has the better they are for your spine and your posture.

There are three basic types of innerspring mattresses and these are:

Open coil mattress – open coils offer amazing support because they are quite firm and even provide more support than pocketed springs. However, open coil mattresses can start to sag and dip in the middle after they are used for an extended period of time.

Continuous coil mattress – a continuous coil is a spring function where all the coils and connections are created with one continuous piece of wire. This helps to evenly distribute your body weight over all the coils. However, this style of mattress isn’t recommended for couples as if one person moves it will also move the other person too.

Pocket spring mattress – pocket spring mattresses are ideal for all weights as the excessive compression by one will only impact the area of the mattress that the person is lying on.

Advantages of an innerspring mattress:

Established technology – as the innerspring mattress is the oldest type of mattress it means it has been around for a long time and has been developed to provide the most amount of comfort that is possible.

Good ventilation – as the space in between the springs is hollow, the mattress is ventilated very easily.

High durability – the steel that is used in innerspring mattresses now is very durable and strong so they will last an increased amount of time.

Firmness – the innerspring mattress can be bought in many ranges of firmness this is because springs come in a range of different length levels.

Disadvantages of an innerspring mattress:

Weight issue – innerspring mattresses are generally heavy because of their metal construction

Dust mites – the layers of wool foam and fibre make an ideal environment for dust mites to gather.

Less movement separation – if you are sleeping with your partner and they move around it will also affect you too.

In conclusion, we have discovered that innerspring mattresses may be good for some people and may not be good for other people. Whether a bed is good or bad depends on the preference of an individual and whether they like the support that the coils of an innerspring mattress offer or whether they would prefer the sinking feeling of a memory foam mattress instead.
