A single bed is the smallest standard bed size available on the market today. Also known as a twin bed, this bed is most commonly used by a single person and is very commonly used to sleep children in. Additionally, they are the standard bed size used for bunk beds.

The History of the single bed

Single beds have always been in fashion, especially between married couples, many of whom slept separately on such beds between 1870 and 1970. However, research since the late 19th century shows how this practice of sleeping on separate twin beds was adopted so that couples did not pass on germs through exhaled breath. By the early 20th century single beds were common for being fashionable rather than for health precautions. However, by the 1960s they began to be seen as a sign of a failing marriage and slowly began to fall out of fashion.
